Major Retail Grocery Group Drives Revenue and Engagement with Support from Hughes
Customer
With more than 220,000 employees, this large retail grocery group operates seven distinct brands across approximately 2,000 locations, including retail stores, corporate offices, distribution centers, and warehouses. The organization builds strong ties within the communities it serves and maintains robust, ongoing food rescue and hunger relief programs to address food insecurity.
Each brand operates independently with its own technology needs, support plans, and store formats ranging from small neighborhood markets to large-format grocery stores. The retailer serves millions of weekly customers across physical and digital channels and launched a retail media platform that unifies in-store digital displays to serve internal messaging and third-party paid ads.
Challenge
The customer faced growing friction across its digital signage environment that spanned seven brands operating independently under one corporate umbrella. Individual stores were manually updating pricing and promotional content on screens, a process that risked inaccuracies and consumed significant labor at each location for every sale cycle.
A desire to drive employee engagement, support training initiatives, extend digital signage capabilities into new operational areas, and capture emerging revenue opportunities were not well supported by the grocery group’s existing technology ecosystem. Much of the organization’s workforce is deskless and dispersed across grocery stores, distribution centers, and warehouses. The limited channels available for receiving corporate communications, safety updates, and leadership messaging complicated the customer’s efforts to nurture an inclusive culture and promote professional development.
Hughes Solution
Hughes deployed a comprehensive digital signage solution spanning all seven brands and multiple environment types. Customer-facing screens display sales pricing, QR code-enabled promotions, and third-party retail media advertisements. Breakrooms include employee-facing screens for engagement, announcements, employee recognition, and training. Strategically located screens in the distribution center and warehouse environments deliver corporate messaging and safety information to workers.
The Hughes MediaSignage Server platform supports customizable templates that allow each brand to manage its own content independently while leveraging integrated infrastructure. Content can be uploaded in formats as simple as a spreadsheet, and AI tools are available to streamline the process with minimal labor. This also enables integration with third-party retail media platforms, giving the grocery group ultimate flexibility to optimize its screen network for internal initiatives while also monetizing by selling advertising space to other brands.
Hardware implementations occur in waves to minimize operational friction. When supply chain constraints disrupted sourcing from overseas, Hughes pivoted to domestically available alternatives to maintain deployment and refresh schedules. Made-to-order procurement was also refined to reduce the risk of delays. Screens continued to be delivered to the customer’s locations within the planned time windows and the organization added resilience to its architecture with minimal cost increases.
