HughesON solution to upgrade critical weather tracking and data collection services
Hughes has been selected to upgrade and expand managed satellite and wireless network services at National Weather Service (NWS) locations throughout the US. The comprehensive HughesON™
solution will provide the NWS with the network services needed to gather and report local weather tracking and forecasting data using capacity on the Hughes JUPITER 1 (EchoStar XVII) and JUPITER 2 (EchoStar XIX) High-Throughput Satellites (HTS). At mission-critical locations, 4G LTE
wireless backup will ensure a dual-path network architecture for increased availability. In addition, Hughes HR4860 Secure SD-WAN Gateways will be installed at the locations and provide a live dashboard with 24/7 access to network performance data and analytics.
“Few government networks touch as many lives across the US,” explained Tony Bardo, assistant vice president of government solutions at Hughes. “We all depend on the National Weather Service’s daily forecast, which becomes critical for emergency preparedness before an impending disaster and follow-up tracking in its aftermath. We are proud to deliver the network they need to carry out their important mission with speed, accuracy and reliability.”
The expansion agreement is part of a contract with ERT, Inc., a vendor for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA), of which NWS is a sub-agency.
