The latest generation Hughes HX System is a high-performance, field-proven satellite networking solution to backhaul all generations of cellular base station technologies—including 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE—and is cost-justified in areas that are impossible or prohibitively expensive to reach using traditional terrestrial means, such as fiber, cable or microwave. This includes air, land and sea platforms, whether fixed or mobile.

The Hughes HX System can be rapidly deployed virtually anywhere in the world and provides the industry-best latency and jitter solution. It is the clear choice for interconnecting cellular base stations in rural and hard-to-reach areas, and additionally can be implemented as a backup to urban terrestrial links or to rural sites with multiple microwave hops. Such a combined terrestrial and satellite backhaul architecture yields the highest possible network availability by virtue of two alternate path technologies—with the satellite path being more robust when disaster strikes and with quicker service restoral in the aftermath.

Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation

The HX System is based on a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) structure with dynamic bandwidth allocation as needed, making it particularly effective in supporting cellular backhaul traffic where the required capacity varies over time of day. With the implementation of Small Cells growing, particularly in rural and remote locations, the traffic patterns of these Small Cells is particularly well suited to TDMA access and the HX System.

Industry Best Latency and Jitter Performance

Fully compliant with IPoS, the industry’s leading satellite air interface, approved by TIA, ETSI and TIA, including DVB-S2 and ACM (adaptive coding and modulation), the HX System incorporates a host of unique backhaul-related features including Just In Time (JIT), Jitter Buffer, Scheduling Bypass, and Real Time Fast Track. Together they enable extremely fast packet processing that reduces round-trip latency to approximately 600 milliseconds and one-way jitter to 20 milliseconds, resulting in superior voice quality and very efficient data throughput―essential for real-time applications.
