Cellular Backhaul

Expand coverage and open new opportunities
with Hughes Satellite Cellular Backhaul.

Cellular Backhaul

Wireless communication devices have become an integral part of people’s daily lives, both personal and business, with positive growth occurring in every corner of the world. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are constantly looking for ways to increase coverage and reduce costs to meet this demand. Yet there remain many millions unreached that live and work in ex-urban, rural and remote areas where unavailability or the high cost of terrestrial backhaul has been a barrier to Mobile coverage expansion. Until now.

The market leading JUPITER System is a high-performance, field-proven satellite networking solution to backhaul all generations of cellular technologies—including 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE—and is cost-effective in areas that are impossible or prohibitively expensive to reach using traditional terrestrial means, such as fiber, cable or microwave.

The Hughes JUPITER System can be rapidly deployed virtually anywhere in the world and provides the industry-leading latency and jitter specifications. It is the clear choice for interconnecting cellular base stations in rural and hard-to-reach areas, and additionally can be implemented as a backup to urban terrestrial links or to rural sites with multiple microwave hops. Such a combined terrestrial and satellite backhaul architecture yields the highest possible network availability by virtue of two alternate path technologies—with the satellite path being more robust when disaster strikes and with quicker service restoral in the aftermath.

JUPITER System Implements Native 4G/LTE Acceleration

Smartphones have come down in cost dramatically and are in ubiquitous use.  Consumers expect to have 4G/LTE speeds on their smartphones and expect the MNOs to provide the network infrastructure to support high speed broadband service.  MNOs are therefore under pressure to aggressively deploy 4G/LTE out and away from metropolitan areas to keep their customers satisfied.  With the use of JUPITER System with 4G/LTE acceleration, MNOs can now confidently deploy service anywhere in the world.  And to ensure that the satellite capacity is efficiently utilized, both the JUPITER HG220 Gateway and the JUPITER HT2500 Remote Terminal, incorporate techniques to accelerate 4G/LTE traffic.  Satellite bandwidth savings of 30-60 percent are possible with the JUPITER System.

Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation

The JUPITER System is based on a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) return channel with dynamic bandwidth allocation matched to the cell site needs, making it particularly effective in supporting cellular backhaul traffic where the required capacity varies over time of day. With the implementation of Small Cells growing, particularly in rural and remote locations, the traffic patterns of these Small Cells is particularly well suited to TDMA access and the JUPITER System.

Industry Best Latency and Jitter Performance

Fully compliant with IPoS, the industry’s leading satellite air interface, approved by TIA, ETSI and TIA, including DVB-S2X and ACM (adaptive coding and modulation) in the forward channel, the JUPITER System is well matched to backhaul cellular traffic. The round-trip latency is reduced to approximately 600 milliseconds and one-way jitter to 10 milliseconds, resulting in superior voice quality and very efficient data throughput―essential for real-time applications.

Full Range of Solutions

Hughes offers a full range of satellite-based RAN backhaul solutions that have been specifically designed for mobile operators to enable rapid and cost-effective service expansion into rural or hard-to-serve markets. These solutions provide high-quality satellite backhaul while optimizing space segment resource utilization by coupling the appropriate satellite technology with intelligent traffic optimization.

Hughes Cellular Backhaul Experience

Over the last decade Hughes has helped MNOs connect their cellular networks on three generations of satellite platforms: HN, HX, and JUPITER.  These satellite platforms have made possible the interconnection of RANs from the leading mobile industry suppliers; One of the largest cellular backhaul deployments is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 1,000 satellite connected sites have brought the benefits of wireless communications to more and more communities in that country.

Building on the JUPITER System, Hughes is stands ready to help MNOs bring the power of broadband wireless using 4G/LTE to ever increasing parts of the world.
