Second Consecutive Year as Top Performer Among All Major Broadband Services

Germantown, Md.—The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) sixth annual report on consumer broadband services has ranked HughesNet® satellite Internet service first among all major Internet service providers (ISPs) for delivering on advertised performance promises. “Measuring Broadband America – 2016,” issued on December 1, 2016, ranked HughesNet the leader for delivering advertised download and upload speeds for the second year in a row.

HughesNet is America’s #1 satellite broadband service with more than 1 million subscribers, and is delivered by Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes), the world’s leading provider of broadband satellite solutions and services.

The FCC report evaluated 16 satellite, DSL, cable and fiber Internet access services, serving over 80% of the U.S. residential marketplace. For the second straight year, it found HughesNet exceeded advertised download and upload speeds – even during peak times – at higher rates than any other provider. Download speeds were consistently more than 150 percent higher than advertised. Similarly, upload speeds were nearly 200 percent greater than advertised speed.

HughesNet ranked first among satellite Internet providers, leading in multiple performance categories, including delivering advertised speeds, consistency of speed and web browsing performance.

DSL providers lagged behind HughesNet in delivering advertised service rates, including four out of six DSL services delivering speeds of less than 100 percent of their advertised claims.

“This year’s FCC report independently validates that, year over year, HughesNet delivers on the consistent performance promised to our customers,” said Mike Cook, senior vice president, North America Division at Hughes. “We are proud to be the most trustworthy, reliable provider of high-speed satellite Internet access to our ever-expanding base of subscribers, regardless of where they live or work.”

The “Measuring Broadband America” report, which is published annually by the FCC, documents the evolution of broadband service quality, including download and upload speeds and the performance of specific applications, such as web browsing, VoIP, and streaming video across 16 services from 13 ISPs.

The top ranking in the FCC report validates Hughes’ 40-plus years of experience in managing high-speed satellite networks and advancing the state of the art in satellite technology. Hughes pioneered consumer satellite Internet and continues to innovate. Later this month, Hughes will launch the industry’s highest-capacity broadband satellite, EchoStar XIX. It will more than double HughesNet’s existing capacity and pave the way for future service enhancements while significantly expanding broadband access to currently unserved and underserved regions of the U.S. from coast to coast.
