The SPACEWAY 3 satellite, built by Boeing Satellite Systems International, Inc., was successfully launched on August 14, 2007 by Arianespace and is in its permanent geosynchronous orbital slot of 95° West longitude.
The SPACEWAY 3 system was designed and developed by Hughes as a next-generation, Ka-band broadband satellite system, the world’s first commercial satellite to employ on-board traffic switching and routing capability. Combined with many other advances in satellite technology, such as 10 Gbps overall capacity, fast packet switching, and dynamic beam forming, the SPACEWAY 3 satellite ushered in a new world of bandwidth-on-demand satellite services with true site-to-site, single-hop networking of high-performance ground terminals.
SPACEWAY 3 represents the most sophisticated advanced packet transmission infrastructure, complete with IP-based user interfaces, satellite terminals, comprehensive network management, and service management functionality, all optimized to provide end-to-end broadband access and network connectivity services.
SPACEWAY 3 combines the traditional advantages of satellite, namely ubiquitous reach and efficient broadcast/multicast, with high data rates and mesh connectivity—to give customers a fast, efficient, flexible, and cost-effective communications solution. It expanded the addressable market for broadband satellite IP services by four times or more leading to the development of new, value-added solutions.
