The Hughes Technology Advantage

HN/HX Bandwidth Efficiency

Both the HN and HX systems incorporate significant features and technology to maximize the efficiency of these systems. These features span across a wide range of the OSI model from Physical layer up to the Application layer. Taken together, these features and technologies enable operators to get more throughput than any system on the market.

HN/HX Systems High-Performance IP Routing

Built on a solid foundation of IP features and functionality, the HN/HX systems are the solutions for satellite routing where full IP functionality is required together with performance. The HN/HX systems provide advanced bandwidth management capabilities, which give operators the ability to custom design various Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) on a per-remote basis. As pure IP-based solutions, the HN/HX systems incorporate a strong set of IP functions and features.

On-Demand Streaming

On-Demand Streaming is a new, performance-enhancing feature of the HN System. On-Demand Streaming gives operators the option to deliver an enhanced range of high Quality of Service (QOS) offerings by dynamically allocating Constant Bit Rate (CBR) transport services per application session.

HN Acceleration & Compression

A comprehensive package of acceleration and compression technologies is embedded in every Hughes HN satellite router. The result is dramatically improved throughput and response-time through the mitigation of satellite delay, meaning Hughes customers experience wireline or better performance of broadband IP applications.

  • Advanced techniques including TCP spoofing, ACK reduction, and flow control accelerate TCP traffic using Hughes proprietary Performance Enhancement Proxy (PEP)
  • Web browsing performance over satellite is significantly improved by anticipating and fetching a Web page's embedded objects before a browser requests them
  • DNS caching eliminates satellite latency introduced by DNS lookup queries
  • Advanced compression algorithms including stateful compression, significantly improve compression ratios, and resulting throughput

HN Encryption

Every Hughes HN system comes standard with DES encryption for data and Triple DES encryption for key distribution on the outroute carrier. Additionally available on the Hughes system are standards-based IPSec solutions for remote access and site-to-site VPNs. These solutions overcome the inherent performance penalty that IPSec VPNs typically cause standard satellite solutions.

HN Outroute Cancellation Module

The HN Outroute Cancellation Module (OCM) is a Hughes-patented technology that enables service providers to maximize their spectral efficiency—thereby yielding significant savings in space segment costs. The HN OCM is based on an overlay system (in Ku- or C-band) whereby the outroute and inroute traffic share the same frequency spectrum. Advanced signal processing is used at the hub to cancel the overlaid outroute signal, leaving the inroute signal to be cleanly demodulated.
