Helping States Serve Their Citizens

In Arkansas, Hughes was awarded an IDIQ contract in July to provide a statewide backup network for the Department of Finance as well as emergency backup for the state’s broadcast radio network during bad weather. This is the first step for additional state agencies to connect to this network for backup communications.

The Texas Department of Information Systems awarded Hughes a contract to sell a broad range of HughesNet services to state agencies and local government entities. For example, Hughes was recently contracted to provide an 85-site satellite network for the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife as backup for its existing terrestrial network.

In Arizona, the Department of Parks uses HughesNet Business Internet service at remote sites. Hughes also holds an IDIQ contract in Oregon, a recent award where everything is contractually in place for officials from agencies across the state to order services and equipment as needed. In addition, a number of proposals and bids are in the works with other states in response to their growing interest in satellite broadband.

In Case of Emergency

The Florida Emergency Management Agency (FLEMA) is using Hughes satellite technology to power an alert system to warn citizens when potential emergencies threaten. Covering more than 100 state and county agency fixed sites as well as three mobile units, the Hughes solution may also be used by FLEMA in the future for videoconferencing, video telecasts, and IP telephony.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is employing an advanced Hughes broadband satellite solution to provide backup communications when its terrestrial network fails. The statewide solution connects more than 100 sites, including police, health, and county emergency operations centers.

Hughes is also providing transportable satellite broadband solutions to a number of other states, including Mississippi, Virginia, and South Carolina, enabling them to resume communications quickly after an emergency.
