From the peaks of the Andes Mountains—known in the Inca language as “Apus,” meaning “mountain gods”— to the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin, Peru is a spectacular, geographically diverse country. But that diversity poses a significant challenge to the delivery of terrestrial broadband services. Enter the Fondo de Inversion en Telecomunicaciones (FITEL), a digital inclusion program that aims to bring broadband to Peruvians everywhere in their beautiful country. Sponsored by Televías Andinas Group Peru, the FITEL project is already providing basic telecommunications services to underserved rural and remote areas. Indeed, over the next few years, Televías Andinas expects to expand the services to include a complete range of voice, video, and data communications.

As part of the FITEL project, Televías Andinas is employing the comprehensive Hughes HN broadband satellite system to provide high-speed Internet access and Voice over IP (VoIP) services to over 1,000 rural communities. The HN system is fully compliant with the IPoS/ DVB-S2 standard, including ACM (Adaptive Coding and Modulation), and is designed to support a wide range of bandwidth-intensive services, including VoIP, high-speed Internet access, interactive distance learning, videoconferencing, and multimedia streaming. Hughes is the first company to implement DVB-S2 with ACM, the most efficient implementation available, which yields up to 50 percent greater throughput over the original standard.

"Satellite communications is an essential technology for governments to utilize as they modernize the vital infrastructure that drives economic development, especially in a mountainous country like Peru,” said Miguel E. Munoz, General Manager of Televías Andinas. “The bandwidth efficiency of the Hughes equipment, coupled with its scalability and ease of installation, makes it perfectly suited for this application. With Hughes, we can provide the highest-quality connectivity regardless of bandwidth requirement, location, business application, satellite band, or topology.”

According to Nick Marzella, vice president of the Central America and Latin America group at Hughes, “Economic development calls for providing broadband services to people wherever they live, even in the most remote areas of a country. Our HN System is ideal for enabling Televías Andinas to offer broadband IP and voice services across the entire challenging geography of Peru.”

Whether they’re on the Pacific coast, high in the Andes, or deep in the tropical forests, people in the remotest parts of Peru will be able for the first time to get all the benefits of broadband—truly making a difference in their lives. But the synergy of Televías Andinas and Hughes will not end with the FITEL project. “Using the powerful Hughes platform acquired by Televías Andinas, we are jointly exploring new business opportunities,” added Munoz. “Fortunately Hughes understands that beyond the FITEL program there are so many opportunities that are waiting for us. With Hughes technology and our local knowledge, the imagination has no limits.”
