e-Mexico: Connecting Schools, Hospitals, and Government

President Vicente Fox and representatives from TELMEX and the Ministry for Communications and Transport opened the Expo e-Mexico forum in August at the Centro de Exposiciones Banamex in Mexico City where e-Mexico was officially launched.

e-Mexico is a national initiative of the Mexican government sponsored by President Vicente Fox to provide broadband access in rural areas. TELMEX, the leading telecommunications company in Mexico, is now connecting schools, hospitals and other government entities under the e-Mexico project. Services are being used to extend health, educational, economical, governmental, scientific, and technological services to rural communities.

As part of the e-Mexico project, Hughes supplied TELMEX with two Hughes Network Operations Centers (NOC) and 4,000 DW broadband satellite terminals.

Vinod Shukla, senior vice president at Hughes, stated, “We are proud to have been selected to participate in the e-Mexico initiative. It is particularly satisfying to be part of a project that will bring meaningful benefits—educational, social and economic—to the people of rural Mexico. Hughes has made a long-term commitment to support TELMEX’s aggressive implementation of the e-Mexico project.”
