Instant Streaming Broadband in a Compact Package
News reporters, explorers, emergency workers, and business people around the world rely on portable communications. But for many of today’s mobile workforce, staying connected by cell phones or PDAs capable only of basic email and low-resolution images is no longer enough. They need the capability to send live videos and sharp images. That takes high-speed streaming connections and guaranteed bandwidth.
Introducing ThurayaIP, an advanced mobile satellite terminal that packs high bandwidth with streaming capability into a package half the size of a laptop computer. Developed by Hughes for Thuraya, one of the world’s leading mobile satellite operators, ThurayaIP enables delivery of high-quality video and large file transfers throughout Thuraya’s coverage footprint in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Building upon the existing IP data service, ThurayaIP is capable of a peak receive rate of 444 kbps and a 384 kbps symmetric streaming connection with a guaranteed bit rate, eliminating the problem of competing for bandwidth with other users.
Not only small but rugged and easy to set up, ThurayaIP is built to operate in the most demanding environments. Compliant with the IP55 standard for water resistance, it is rated for temperatures from -250C to +550C, and is ideal for media, corporate, and government travelers who need to set up a temporary office with broadband connectivity—instantly. It supports wireless 802.11 Wi-Fi as well as wired Ethernet and USB ports, and can be easily operated, even without a browser or a PC. The user needs only to attach a specialized device, such as an IP camera, and select the correct quality of service using the built-in control and status panel.
Thuraya serves more than 250,000 customers with high-quality mobile voice and data services in a huge coverage area that reaches nearly one-third of the world’s population in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The 2007 launch of the operator’s second satellite now extends its coverage to the eastern edge of Asia.
“The launch of ThurayaIP clearly positions Thuraya as a leader in the fast-growing, highend mobile satellite data market,” said Graham Avis, vice president of the Hughes Mobile Satellite Terminal Group. “And for Hughes, this achievement is the latest in a long line of successful mobile satellite terminals, reinforcing our longtime leadership in developing this industry’s most innovative technology products.”
With the world’s rapidly growing mobile workforce, the need for portable communications will only continue to soar. Whether reporting the news, exploring for oil, or responding to a disaster, people can depend on next-generation technology from Thuraya and Hughes to get the most out of their communications— instantly. |
