Hughes and the U.S. Government
From emergency preparedness, to highly secure private networks, to telework and distance learning, whatever the applications your agency requires, you can count on Hughes to deliver the most advanced technologies and highest standard of communications solutions to support the many missions of government. Hughes has a proven track record of delivering comprehensive networking solutions to the U.S. government. Here are just a few examples.
► GETN
Distance education is recognized worldwide as being vital in maintaining a strong, well-trained workforce. One such noteworthy program in the U.S is the Government Education and Training Network (GETN), which utilizes advanced broadband networks from Hughes and the latest audio and video technologies to provide distance learning nationwide. Developed by the Government Alliance for Training and Education (GATES), GETN is a network of Federal agencies that use a common satellite carrier for an interoperable, interactive network that enables agencies to share distance learning programs using common facilities.
► SSA
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is working with Hughes to operate and support its Interactive Video Tele-training (IVT) Network. Hughes provides total lifecycle management of the IVT Network, including video delivery over its nationwide HughesNet broadband satellite service; all equipment installation, maintenance, and integration; onsite staffing for the SSA's IVT network; and hub operation and maintenance. The IVT Network reaches out to more than 1,650 SSA offices in the Continental United States, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
► Montgomery County Fire Department, Maryland Urban Search and Rescue
Federal COOP requirements, including the National Response Framework, require agencies to ensure continuity of network communications during a crisis. When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, rendering terrestrial networks inoperable, the Maryland Urban Search and Rescue team was ready and able to help with HughesNet satellite solutions. Using the nationwide HughesNet broadband satellite service, the team was able to monitor and disseminate news and information in real-time about the affected areas, and with the ability to rapidly set up transportable sites – thereby enabling online broadband connectivity virtually anywhere in North America.
