FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hughes Receives SAS70 Type-II Certification for HughesNet® Managed Services
Germantown, Md., August 28, 2007 Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES) today announced that it has achieved American Institute of Certified Public Accountant's Statement of Auditing Standards Number 70 (SAS 70) certification. SAS 70 is the authoritative guidance that allows service organizations to disclose their control activities and processes to their customers and their customers' auditors in a uniform reporting format.
To gain SAS70 certification, an independent Certified Public Accountant audited significant areas of the HughesNet service such as systems security, system implementation and maintenance, and problem and incident management, ensuring service continuity and other key operations. Hughes' Type-II certification also required testing of the operating effectiveness of the controls over a six-month period, from January through June 2007.
Hughes is committed to providing world-class broadband solutions that integrate both terrestrial and satellite technologies in a fully managed service under the HughesNet brand, said Dave Zatloukal, senior vice president of Network Services at Hughes.
Publicly traded companies use SAS70 Type-II audits to assist with compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley's Section 404 requirements for outsourced services. SAS70 is designated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as an acceptable method for management to obtain assertions about a service organization's internal controls without conducting separate audits and assessments. As a result, SAS70 is a preferred method of providing reasonable assurance to a service organization's customers subject to Section 404 and can still be used for other audit-related purposes as well.
Hughes' SAS70 Type-II certification also provides our customers with significant cost savings. Without this certification, many of our customers would have to expend a tremendous amount of resources in order to document compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in connection with our services, said Phil O'Brien, vice president of Contracts, North American Division at Hughes.
