The high availability solution from Hughes enables Orocom to deliver customized broadband services, including triple play voice, data and video to customers across Pakistan, and expanding throughout the region. According to recent reports from the Pakistani government, the cost of broadband in Pakistan is prohibitively high. By utilizing Hughes’ industry-leading broadband satellite solutions, Orocom can deliver affordable broadband access enabling improved communications and commerce for Pakistan’s businesses. Orocom also benefits from Hughes’ depth of networking experience and its international presence, which will facilitate rapid and efficient growth for the company. “Hughes is the global leader in satellite broadband products and services and brings to Pakistan a level of knowledge that is unmatched in this region,” said Hamid Nawaz, chief operating officer, Orocom. “We can bring a new level of broadband access and benefits to both businesses and consumers in Pakistan. We look forward to solidifying our offering here and expanding our service offerings throughout Asia and Northern Africa.” The Orocom service is based on Hughes’ HX system, a cost-effective solution for IP networks which employs the DVB-S2 standard with ACM (Adaptive Coding Modulation). The Hughes DVB-S2/ACM implementation yields higher throughputs and more efficient satellite bandwidth utilization, because of the ability to custom design the combination of coding and modulation of the outbound channel for each remote terminal. The HX supports a variety of applications in the financial, oil and gas, education, government, and retail sectors as well as for GSM cellular backhaul. To date, over 170,000 Hughes broadband terminals with DVB-S2/ACM have been shipped worldwide. “Orocom has a deep understanding of the broadband needs within Pakistan and throughout South and Central Asia, as well as North Africa,” said Soheil Mehrabanzad, Hughes’ assistant vice president and general manager for Middle East/Africa region. “By combining that knowledge with Hughes’ field-proven products and networking expertise, they are creating a service that will increase operational efficiencies and enable new applications for businesses across Pakistan.” Orocom will begin delivering the service by the end of March 2007 utilizing its network operations center in Pakistan, and plans to expand service to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, Central Asian States and North Africa.
